In his lecture Dr. Bernd Hunger will present the projects, implemented in German large housing estates from 1990s. He will cover such topics as mass modernization, energy transformation of urban areas and new construction inside the LHEs.

Dr. Bernd Hunger – urban planner and sociologist. In 1991 he founded the urban planning company „StadtBüro Hunger, Stadtforschung und -planung“, which became one of the key actors in the history of LHE’ transformation after German reunification. His biography as a researcher included such works as "GDR - Urban Development Forecast", "Overwhelmed Neighborhoods", "Urban Development of New Large Housing Estates in East Germany", which influenced German policy regarding LHE. Dr. Bernd Hunger is a chairman of the "Competence Center Large Housing Estates", a non-profit association, promoting the further development of large housing estates in Germany and EU. Since 1999 he also has been working as a consultant for urban development and research at the GdW - Federal Association of German Housing and Real Estate Companies.

Housing in Question is realised in the frames of the ACT UP Project organised by Dekabristen E.v. and supported by German Foreign Office.

Die Vorlesungen finden jeweils an einem Mittwoch (18 oder 19 Uhr MESZ) im Juli, August und September mit einer anschließenden Online-Diskussion statt. Die Sprache ist Englisch.

Lecture is devoted to explaining and understanding contemporary governance within housing estates in Prague with special attention to the role of public and private institutions. Housing estates are undergoing considerable functional heterogenization and becoming integral parts of the city as a consequence of a mix of specific public policies and commercial development. In his lecture, Dr. Ouredniczek will focus on three crucial aspects of the contemporary development of housing estates within the capital city of Prague: (i); the new functional differentiation of housing estates as a consequence of private activities and commercialization; (II) the role of master planning and public policies on the level of both the city and self-governed city districts; and (iii) an evaluation of socio-economic status as a synthetic outcome of contemporary development. Lecture is based on the analysis of the content of planning documents and policies (Metropolitan Plan, Strategic plan of Prague and selected documents of the city districts). A case study of the largest housing estate and a symbol of socialist housing in Czechia – Jižní Mesto – illustrates the impact of state and municipal policies and commercialization on the local level.
